Measuring Device (To measure is to know)

Door Christophe Muylaert, 2026

30cm x 20cm

Measuring Device (To Measure Is to Know) consists of a subtly deformed geometric object coated in dark industrial Hammerite paint and fitted with multiple spirit levels. The object is presented on a minimal display support, creating the impression that it hovers in space. Spirit levels conventionally function as instruments of precision, orientation, and objective verification. In this work, however, they are attached to a form that resists stable measurement. The object possesses no privileged orientation, while its irregular geometry causes the different levels to suggest conflicting frames of reference. Although the sculpture resembles a functional measuring instrument, it ultimately fails to provide a coherent reading. The work occupies an ambiguous position between scientific apparatus, sculptural object, and fictional device. It can be understood as a pataphysical instrument operating according to unknown laws, but equally as a model of a world that exceeds the systems designed to comprehend it. By presenting measurement as both necessary and unreliable, Measuring Device (To Measure Is to Know) creates a condition of perceptual and epistemological uncertainty in which orientation, certainty, and knowledge remain permanently provisional.
